A side effect of that is we live in denial about the complex systemic reality of why harm happens. We are terrified of admitting we've done harm, because that would mean we're "bad," or our loved ones are.
And thus we remain unhealed and stuck in the same cycles. We are hiding from ourselves
As an abolitionist anthropologist, I offer that this is a result of our carceral culture.
We have been convinced, to the benefit of capitalists, that some people are "bad" and only "bad people" do harmful things. Thus we collectively let them throw racialized men in prison & invade "evil" countries
a) conflate "successful under capitalism" with "a good environment for kids to grow up in," which are two VERY different things.
And b) are unwilling to acknowledge that people they love can do harm, because they're afraid that would mean their loved ones are "bad people," so instead they deny it
I think it's very telling that "Jared" was raised in what he says is a "good" family, but he developed problems with drugs and anger in his teens. That generally doesn't happen to people who grew up in truly loving, supportive environments. I think a lot of people +

A conclusion I came to is that these men feel like most people (including the “mass media”) don’t take the time — or have no interest in taking the time — to understand them or where they come from. Valid or not, this seemed to compound their feelings of isolation, which in turn bred a lack of curiosity on their part, furthering their own intolerances.
This is exactly why I made my YouTube video reaching out to men—it's beyond my capacity to help the ones quoted in this article but there are many more who haven't fully fallen into the pipeline yet, and they need understanding AND accurate political context for their pain:
