Maybe destroying the other cars be the goal ? Trying two alternating gameplay phases (dodging cars vs ramming into them). Now destroying cars scores you point and increases the game speed. I also added a chain explosions so choosing when to use your shield matters.

haven't posted anything about Space Cat DX in a while, so here's something I think is cool:

the autoscrolling camera now supports moving in any direction. it slows down as enemies populate the screen, while destroying enemies speeds up the pace. #gamedev

I still find the gameplay a bit bland. The main thing I find exciting in the game is squeezing through tight spots, so I want to encourage the player to do this. Using the "near miss" system I tried earlier, I added a shield gauge that allows you to take you one free hit.

With this style, I'm thinking this could be something viewed through a screen, like a drone on a radar. So I wanted to experiment with "glitchy" effects and transitions. This particular one was inspired by the "rewind effect" in Picket Puzzle! www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?pid=144...

The game is starting to emerge! Echo-locate to scope out the floor below you, then drop into it and defuse the timers without being spotted by the cameras. Limited line of sight and procedural levels seem to have been the missing pieces, now the echo-location feels powerful.

Stumbled upon this cool algo for generating "library" style rooms for my #pico8 #gamedev project.

You repeatedly create rectangles, where each rectangle can shrink on any one of its sides. Then, you remove one wall tile from each row and each column. Gives a great balance of organized but mazy!

The player's hitbox is quite small (4x4 pixels), and I don't think I can draw sprites that small that would still read well enough. Instead I'm going for a more abstract style, and I'm trying out some palettes that would work with it.

There's an alarm sound when a laser is about to shoot. When playtesting, my partner though that it was some kind of siren coming from an emergency vehicle which, I realized, makes way more sense than a laser.

Yes, it was quite the headache ๐Ÿ˜ซ I ended up using stat(54) and stat(56) to keep in sync with the music, and rewrote the patterns on the fly to make the the sounds play at the exact right time when the player's timing was perfect. I tested it on a couple of platforms and it was pretty robust!
