I believe 23 is normal. The one I served on was 23. But we served for four weeks and heard some sixty-odd cases. Not everyone was there every day, but as long as we had quorum, we could hear cases.

But as you listen to case after case, you start to sense where important info is missing. You can ask the DA questions, but they often dismiss them as immaterial. So you know you are making a half-baked guess as to whether the case has merit. I used to think GJ indictments meant more than they do.

Oh, God, flashbacks to Grand Jury duty. That was the most painfully eye opening experience. HS civics classes did not prepare me for how limited the info is that you get in GJ. Barring some extraordinary circumstances (one of the sixty-odd cases I heard), you only hear the prosecution's view.

Years ago I oversaw a residency exchange program with partners in Eastern Europe. One partner was in Romania, and when we went to visit Bucharest, there was an exhibition of photographs by Ion Grigorescu from a 1975 "electoral meeting" where people had to confirm their support of Ceaușescu.

I was waiting to read that they banned the Bible since, as my 10th grade Western Lit teacher proclaimed, the number one lesson from that book is that sex makes the world go 'round. Amusingly, this individual was also a Sunday School teacher at a local Reformed Christian church.
