It uses interviews with stakeholders to identify barriers to bringing vacant housing back into use. Our analysis shows that barriers often overlap several areas of concern.

One of the key outputs from this was the development of a provisional typology of vacancy in Dublin. This was designed to get away from seeing vacancy as a singular number and instead relating to several urban policy challenges.

The final report was funded by the Housing Agency and focused on the challenge of vacant over the shop units (VATSUs).

The first two reports were produced through the Rethinking Urban Vacancy project, funded by Research Ireland. The aim was to better understand how housing vacancy was measured, produced and responded to in the Irish context, focusing on three cities: Dublin, Waterford and Cork.

Housing vacancy has become a growing area of research and policy concern, and a lot of work has been done in getting under the hood of what appears a simple problem on the surface.
