The age of consent was the primary equality demand for gay men in the 1980s/90s. Equal marriage was barely discussed back then.
It was lowered from 21 to 18 in 1994, only crystallising the notion that homosexuality was inferior.
It was eventually equalised in 2000 but Section 28 still was law then.

I love the movie Pride (the LGSM one) but it has a scene when the lead boy is told not to tell anyone he’s under 21 ‘because that’s illegal and they won’t have sex with you’.

The age of consent for gay men at the time was 21. I was allowed to play a gay man on stage (I did, in the regional premiere of Torch Song Trilogy) but I was not allowed to be one in real life.
NB It didn’t stop me…

The European region has seen HIV-related deaths rise by 37% since 2010 (37k in 2010; 51k in 2024).
These are HIV-related deaths and so are not the result of an aging population.
Most deaths are outside of the EU, particularly in the conflict-torn Ukraine and Russia.

No, these are HIV-related deaths.
It’s largely in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, particularly Russia and the Ukraine, which were carrying the heaviest burden of HIV before the war.

Ban Conversion Practices post on Insta. ‘News: Minister for Equalities, Olivia Bailey MP, has confirmed the Government are developing a bill to ban conversion practices.’

So called ‘conversion therapy’ is a barbaric practice that inflicts actual harm on young LGBTQ people.
It has no scientific or medical credibility.
I welcome the news that @oliviabailey.bsky.social has confirmed that this Government intends to honour their commitment to ending this cruelty.

You can’t have AIDS unless you have HIV.
If they needed to know whether I’d ever received an AIDS diagnosis, it would need to be a separate question (ticking the ‘HIV/AIDS’ box wouldn’t help).
And yes, I did call them, advised them why the wording was unhelpful, and they have agreed to change it. 💪

I’m fortunate to be brazen about my status so it’s easy for me to do.
Agree that the ‘ever had’ was inappropriate but, to be fair, it was on a long list of conditions some of which are not lifelong so I didn’t argue it.

HIV and AIDS are not the same thing. It’s lazy to present them as if they are. When anyone (but medical providers especially) does so they contribute to the two being perceived as interchangeable.

Also nostalgic for the days when I thought Dubya was the worst US President I’d ever know.
