A brilliant work, also Ralph Haussler’s “Apollo Cunomaglos Lord of the Wolves” which examines Cunomaglus in relation to other wolf deities, but especially with Apollo Lykeios

So much of what we know about the ancient Celtic deities is recorded through a Romano-British, and Romano-Gaulish lens. Trying to guess what the Romans were thinking as they came across and syncretised various deities!

Deity of the Week- Cunomaglus
Also known as Apollo Cunomaglus, his name translates as “Hound/Wolf Lord”. There was a temple to Apollo Cunomaglus in Nettleton, North Wiltshire. Finds point to an association with hunting. His association with Apollo also suggests a link to healing.

Etruscan equivalent of Atropos. Her role was one of finality, fixing the fated day of death with a nail. A New Year in Rome was described as a “Clavus anni” “Nail Year” possibly as each year died and began anew.
