Dear Writer by Maggie Smith has otherwise been fine, a thoughtful, pleasant book on writing. But I skipped the tired kintsugi section entirely, and am convinced anyone who is not literally talking about Japanese pottery should do the same during the drafting phase. ππ

Actually unless the author is literally a Japanese potter idc what they have to say about it. Only literal kintsugi, no more metaphors.

If I read/hear/see another white author/podcaster/YouTuber make another damn kintsugi metaphor I am going to riot.

Did you have a favorite?
I read Heated Rivalry first, but now I'm going back and doing them the rest of the way in order.

It's probably a scarcity mindset thing. My brain has identified gay hockey romance as a limited, high value resource. I recognize that the books will be behind long hold times after the 14th. Thus, it feels evolutionarily important to secure (read) the resource now while it's plentiful. πππΆοΈ #Libby

I'm not into hockey, and I'm not even into contemporary romance, but since the series has unlimited Libby checkouts til V day I guess that's what I'm reading because???? It's there?!
#GameChangers #HeatedRivalry Thank you NYPL I guess? ππ

January book spread. Death of the Author by Nnedi Okorafor; Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir; Groenlandia Manhatan by Chloe Cruchaudet; The Lilac People by Milo Todd; Cetaganda by Lois McMaster Bujold; Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh; Enshittification by Cory Doctorow; How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe by Charles Yu; The Lilies by Quinn Diacon-Furtado; and Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid
After debating a day about it, I decided to take the time and import Januaryβs reads into #Storygraph but may loop back and finish updating 2025 and 2024 later. But Iβm going to keep on top of 2026!

Picture of a cat, labeled el gato, on a page with other animals labeled in both English and Spanish
And baby π¦'s other favorite book cat this month is the cat who appears in "My Big Book of Spanish Words" by Rebecca Emberley.
Whenever we get to this page, he always bounces and reaches for the cat to touch it.

We usually read this as an ad-hoc Spanish translation we call "Hola, Gato. Chao, Gato."

Book cover for Hi, Cat. Bye, Cat. By Jade Orlando. 2 illustrated cats are on the cover.
I was gonna start posting what books I read for January but realized my baby's book rankings might be more fun.
8mo. baby π¦'s fave book, Jan 2026:
Hi, Cat. Bye, Cat. by Jade Orlando
No contest. I offer 2 books and read the one he reaches for, and this one ALWAYS wins against every other book.

Is it worth it to import my last 3 ish years of reading history into Storygraph when I currently have it all written in a notebook?
Or do I just start with this year since I'm only 10 books in?
