Dear #skystorians, here is a cool story of a very big cannon experiment of the 1680s in Europe. A 🧵 about the idea of transporting people in cannon balls ...

Snacktime! 🐿️😍

During autumn, red squirrels scour their habitats for nuts, berries & other vital energy sources. They don't hibernate, so they cache lots of this foraged food in shallow holes and tree crevices to keep them going through the cold winter months.

With a return to the Pliocene locked-in, the only meaningful question is, will we stop there or maintain BAU until a return to the Middle Miocene becomes inevitable or - ultimately - the early Eocene?

If the latter, this is what the UK will eventually look like

Reminder to you, to leave leaves on the ground, where they feed the soil and create habitats. They are not untidy they are vital.

Harvard Gazette:
Gazette: “You are the mother of two In ten years you have produced three novels and two short-story collections. Can you talk about your process and how you manage work and family?”
Groff: “I understand that this is a question of vital importance to a lot of people, particularly to other mothers who are artists trying to get their work done, and know that I feel for everyone in the struggle. But until I see a male writer asked that question, I am going to respectfully decline to answer it.”

A wonderful article on Royal privilege & the colossal resources of the British monarchy. Resources that in my own opinion should be national not private assets. It is time for the Royal Collection of art in particular to be in public ownership & used for the nation's benefit.

For 61 years the #BBCWorldService has been broadcasting the latest in science via its weekly Science in Action programme. That dies in the next half hour, with this final edition, reflecting on the fall in trust in expertise driven by malign interests over recent years.

Just entered the last 100 pages of the new one. You really have to leave HDM behind with BoD, and I see a lot of folk struggling with that. TRF is a different voice, though. Anyway, onward!

Looking forward to reading this, especially to better understand the cosmic microwave background part and, obviously, the detail of the Hubble discrepancy. But I'm sure, as always, I'll learn a lot more, and be challenged a great deal.

When the sun shines brightly after rain, the drive through Borrowdale from Keswick in autumn – very slowly, letting any traffic pass, though it's generally quite quiet at that time of year – is one of the most beautiful experiences. Better still with windows down to fill up your senses.
