3/3 We must not shut out either model when we consider conditions like Autism. Both things may exist concurrently: wanting medical intervention and also needing society to be designed in ways that facilitate inclusivity of people exactly as they are.

2/3 While some disabling conditions desire medical intervention for symptoms like pain, fatigue, or difficulty performing tasks, the social model calls on us to ALSO be inclusive & remove barriers in order to celebrate the uniqueness in ability.

AUTISM & The medical model of disability

The medical model of disability is the idea that medicine can & should “fix” people w/ disability.

The social model, a more modern approach, sees disability as a direct reflection of society’s ableism & institutional barriers. 1/3

AltNIH4Science - Science Crisis News Join the conversation

Dear scientists,

We've heard from many of you: "What can I do to act, to help stop the authoritarian takeover? I feel helpless."

One thing you can do is to get every scientist you know onto bluesky.
Get them off Twitter.
Talk to yr colleagues. Make it a point.

If we privatize scientific research & continue this trend of eliminating public sponsored scholarship 👉 as a society we will then accumulate knowledge around things like which 🥚 cartons are more likely to influence consumer buying habits as opposed to whether the 🥚s themselves are healthy.

Very glad to see that @standupforscience.bsky.social is partnering with @indivisible.org for the April 5 Day of Action - standupforscience2025.org/upcoming-act... Science advocates must deploy new skills, find common cause & build large-scale solidarity. This is a great starting place.

Opinion | Why Did Elon Musk Go After Bunkers Full of Seeds? Gene banks are like a survivalist cache: our nation’s safeguard against all future challenges to growing the food we need.

“Moving fast and breaking things may work in some sectors,” but DOGE’s disruptions to a key food store for plant genetics “threaten irreversible losses of crop genetic diversity,” write Iago Hale and Michael Kantar, two agriculture professors.

Due to haphazard slashing of science funding, Columbia Univ has been forced to close 1 of the only dedicated #MECFS research centers in the world.

No research is as lean as #MECFS research. It’s carried out by a dedicated & outstanding group of purpose-driven scientists & community members.

At NIH, ‘everyone is on edge’ as they brace for deep cuts and more centralized control As the NIH braces for cuts of up to 5,000 of its 20,000 positions, “people are scrambling and freaking out,” a researcher said.

NIH is likely cutting up to 25% of its workforce this week. NIH staff have substantial expertise, typically PhDs. And they really *believe* in the work. NIH's will not be able to meet its mission w/these cuts. The scientific threat is not just direct funding cuts www.statnews.com/2025/03/14/n...

I think most sent their lobbyists to try and negotiate when the first NIH cuts hit. Would presidents fare any differently? could universities all go on teaching strike together, like the writers strike?
