So I anyone who is serious about implementing free public transport will need to show a serious plan on:

- how to come up with funding to make up the difference
- how to sustain this funding long term
- how to defend it against cuts from future leadership

However the realist in me goes:

“If you actually implemented this, your local transit agency will miss out on x% of revenue”

In San Diego that would be 30%

And just a month ago transit activists had to move a mountain to merely sustain current transit founding.

The pro free transit argument goes a little bit like this: “public transport is a public good and should be provided to everyone free of charge”.

The visionary in me agrees with that. It’s a great sentiment.

Because last time I checked individuals and companies pay federal taxes directly to the IRS i.e. the Federal Government.

In San Diego that’s not the case and it won’t for a very long time.

Yes, I also dream about a heavy rail purple line and trolley extensions through uptown. But our best chance at getting all of this is increasing ridership on existing route, especially buses.
