Hastings 'Pug' Ismay spent the whole of the First World War, and longer, in Somaliland - there's a lot of detail in John Kiszely's fine biography of him.

In an alternate universe the chief representative of the only major German company operating in Micronesia in the late nineteenth century did not keep his diary in fading lead pencil but in an easy to decipher format.

I support the decision by the IWM not to renew the 15-yr loan of the Ashcroft Victoria Cross collection. The taxpayer has indemnified & funded the costs of security & exhibition of his investment in a prestigious national museum, increasing its value & probably recouping his £5 million. 1/
