I am incredibly proud and deeply emotional to be at this point in my career and personal growth, as an eating disorders expert and lived experience scholar, clinician, teacher, mentor, and advocate. (7)

This personal history serves as a key motivator to help people that have struggled/are struggling with an eating disorder. (6)

This myopic focus on the eating disorder is seriously impairing and fascinating— for me, understanding the thing that nearly destroyed my life was and still is a therapeutic process. (5)

And like most people who struggle with eating disorders, it took complete control of my life, causing many important life roles— being a student, son, friend, and partner— to be underdeveloped. (4)

But what’s less known about my journey is that it was informed by lived experiences. I struggled with a serious eating disorder from roughly the ages of 18-22. (3)

The loss of this student identity, in its formal capacity, is bittersweet, like most major transitions in life. In starting this journey, I wanted to learn more about why eating disorders occur and how we can better prevent and treat these disorders. (2)

Friday I walked and was hooded for my PhD in clinical psychology, earning the title of Dr. Barnhart. I am truly blessed to have shared the day with the most important people in my life, my dear friends, family, and mentors. (1)
