The four-fifths rule is not disparate impact: a woeful tale of epistemic trespassing in algorithmic fairness Computer scientists are trained to create abstractions that simplify and generalize. However, a premature abstraction that omits crucial contextual details creates the risk of epistemic trespassing, b...

I haven't been following their LLM lineup closely, but I thought the recent fuss was about their smaller models

Fast multiplication, determinants, and inverses of arrowhead and diagonal-plus-rank-one matrices over associative fields The article considers arrowhead and diagonal-plus-rank-one matrices in F^(nxn) where F in R,C or H. H is a non-commutative field of quaternions. We give unified formulas for fast matrix-vector multipl...

My friend Ivan Slapniฤar works on arrowhead matrices which show up in the reduction of DPR-k (diagonal plus rank-k) matrices

I have two simple rules of thumb reading critical papers: do the criticisms remain effectively unchanged if you replaced AI with something else, like shoes ๐Ÿ‘ ? do the critiques change if the training and uae change? So much AI criticism fails these simple counterfactual tests โžก๏ธ๐Ÿšฎ

We gave many of those people years to refine the arguments. Instead the critiques have largely devolved into main character-ism while the actual challenges of adoption, inclusivity and exploitation remain heavily understudied

I've been thinking about this quite a bit. IMO taxonomizing every (dis)ability is not necessary, but rather, limit the policy issues to assumptions inherent in human-computer interfaces and systematically enumerate scenarios of degraded UX when each assumption is not met
