Barnard President: Now Is the lime for Colleges to Host Difficult Speakers
If I were editing a college presidentβs guest essay about the importance of colleges hosting βdifficult speakers,β I would ask her to clarify how her argument squares with her history of expelling students for protesting, and why speakers should be treated better than her own students.

The people of Minnesota have executed one of the most impressive civil resistance campaigns I can remember:
- Organized a city wide general strike
- Maintained nonviolent discipline amidst violence
- Mobilized 10,000s in subzero temps to protest and watch ICE
- Flipped public opinion against ICE

ICE murdered RenΓ©e Good in broad daylight. Less than 3 weeks later, they killed Alex Pretti, shooting him 10 times. Every day, we watch as people are ripped from their cars, their homes, their lives.
We can't allow ourselves to look away from this cruelty. Abolish ICE.

they're executing moms and nurses in the street. they're using preschoolers as bait. they're stealing people's dads and grandmas and children. they're tear gassing babies. they're staking out schools. there is no remedy but abolition. any proposal that doesn't start there is an act of violence.

We are not the first people, or the first country, to suffer under a tyrannical government that does not respect our lives, or our rights.
There is a method for how to effectively resist, and eventually topple, such a regime. We can learn from others who came before us.

π¨HOLY CRAP. An ICE whistleblower just revealed a secret memo authorizing ICE officers to break into homes without a judicial warrant, which DHS's own legal training materials say is unconstitutional!
ICE then hid the memo from the public, passing it along by word of mouth and private conversation.

Iβm embarrassed for these people. I was at a writing retreat this summer that suggested we use genai for ideation. They told academics to use a plagiarism machine for ideas. If you are doing this, do us all a favor and leave the field. If you have no more ideas, you shouldnβt be an academic.

Sleep is a biological necessity, and sleep deprivation has real physical, psychological, and social consequences that need to be taken seriously. The way our society treats it as slothful to sleep according to natural rhythms (including midday naps and variant chronotypes like night owls) is evil.

Academic conferences, especially those that require travel, are also an inaccessible way to share knowledge and research. The cost of the flight, especially for graduate students, adjuncts and other contingent academic workers; the disregard for the sick and disabled who may not wish to spend 2-3 days among hundreds of unmasked individuals; and the professional hierarchies that are reinforced through the promotion of an aggressive culture of βnetworkingβ that only rewards those who self-promote, are not only impediments to the sharing of knowledgeβthey contribute to the further consolidation and siloing of information among a privileged few.
I'd yeet this at the heads of professional academic orgs to which I used to belong, but they wouldn't care & power comes from below anyway, so instead I yeet it, more gently, at junior scholars trying to do decolonial work. Every academic should read it. workshops4gaza.substack.com/p/against-co...
