IF THEY STOP AND QUESTION YOU ON THE STREET β’ Stay calm. Don't flee. Don't converse with the police or immigration agent. Keep your hands where the police can see them. β’ Ask if you're free to go. If the officer says yes, leave calmly and silently. If they arrest you, you have the right to know why. β’ You have the right to remain silent and you don't have to talk about your immigration or citizenship status with the police, immigration agents, or any officer. You don't have to respond to questions about where you were born or how you came into the country. β’ Don't lie about your immigration or citizenship status or give them fake documents. β’ If you think your rights have been violated don't hesitate to file a complaint. Write down everything you remember so you can present a written MIRAC complaint. I IF YOU'RE ARRESTED β’ Don't resist arrest even if you believe you're being unjustly arrested. That will be fought in court. β’ Prepare yourself and your family in case you're arrested. Memorize phone numbers of your family and lawyer. Make an emergency plan if you have kids or take medications. IF YOU AREN'T A CITIZEN β’ Don't talk about your immigration status with anyone except your lawyer. While you're in jail it's possible that an immigration agent will visit you. You have the right to not respond to questions or sign anything without first talking to a lawyer. Turn off the car, turn on the interior light, open the window a little and put your hands on the steering wheel. β’ If a police office or immigration agent asks to search inside your car, you can say no. But if the police believes the car contains evidence of a or crime, they can search it without your permission. β’ The driver and passengers have the right to remain silent. If you are a passenger, you can ask if you're free to go. If the officer says yes, stay seated silently or calmly leave. Itβs important for Caucasian Americans to know ICE has no jurisdiction over us, but still important to remain calm so they donβt punish our neighbors.
