So much interesting stuff to look through, thanks! I love JT maybe even more than the others I have read as I lived in Twickenham years ago and it brought it all rushing back. Twickenham v Richmond beautifully portraying just how leafy, and gentile Richmond, compared to the other side of the Thames

I read intensely on planes, have all day tomorrow to cross the country, I pulled down Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, so I won't read all of Cusk in one go. Nothing to do but read, what luxury! I have had some great convos on planes and trains though, not lately.

Something arty, was it? I guess he is the contrast to the man on the plane, let's call seat mate a "nine hundred millionaire" so we won't have to hate him too.

#rachelcusktogether I will forgive Cusk her billionaire start, I am heartily sick of their tales in real life, but I loved the rest of today's read--the meet on the plane, the way she is unraveling the gentleman's story, the lovely description of the oft experienced plane safety ode.

I gobbled Brandy Sour, loved how each vignette led you a bit farther down the Island's story, truth telling drip by drip. I ordered more from Foundry Editions, a small press focusing on lit in translation from the Mediterranean world. I think they need US distribution--I had to order from UK.

This is a terrible, typical response and explains the attitude of "let the girls deal with the creepy stuff" instead of rising to change the world so men "lingering" on schoolgirls pictures is just ok, and on the old world goes its merry way it has for eternity. At least keep your mouth shut.

Bakeries are so big now, Bread belly on Clement was one of the early ones with Asian flavors. Zuni cafe if you want classic SF that never needs to change. La Ciccia out in Noe Valley is always good. Indonesian coffee and pandan cakeβKopiku on Lombard. Beit rima is wonderful, sorry to be out of town.

I liked Orlando so much more than I thought I would, because it is still VW, and what she does, she does so well. I liked how she meandered through time, how casually she was able to weave in changes, how beautifully she describes time.Used VSW and her fam, as inspiration.

And the film with Hillary Whats Her Name, and the new one from a few years ago, French, using Orlando as a starting point to discuss gender, were both good.

It shows what a tough time immigrants have always had, wherever they end up. It is hard to be an outsider, and it is devastating to be poor.
