Anyone can face mental health challenges during or after pregnancy. But for mums whoโ€™ve had their children removed, the risk is even higher.

Our listening project with Her Circle aimed to centre these womenโ€™s voices and challenge the stigma they face.

ADHD and perinatal mental health

ADHD and perinatal mental health

Itโ€™s #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek!

Motherhood can be challenging for any new parent, but for mothers with ADHD (diagnosed or undiagnosed) it can feel uniquely overwhelming. 1/4

ADHD affects more than just attention, it impacts emotional regulation, sensory processing, and executive function. These are the very skills that new mothers rely on to manage feeding schedules, lack of sleep, and the relentless demands of newborn care. For ADHD mothers, even the simplest tasks can feel impossible, leading to guilt, anxiety, and burnout at higher rates than their neurotypical peers.

These are the very skills that new mothers rely on to manage feeding schedules, lack of sleep, and the relentless demands of newborn care. As ADHD midwife & NeuroNatalยฎ founder Laura Spence writes in her blog for the MMHA:

"Motherhood is often the breaking point."

Without understanding or accessible care designed for neurodivergence, many mothers face guilt, anxiety, and higher risks of postnatal depression. 3/4

In Laura's blog, she explores why it's crucial to include ADHD in #PerinatalMentalHealth conversations. From tailored support to neurodivergent-friendly environments, she offers her recommendations for improvement: maternalmentalhealthalliance.org/news/adhd-pe... 4/4

Training and Curriculum Development in Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health - PubMed Infant and early childhood mental health (IECMH) is an important field within psychiatry and related disciplines. Historically, IECMH has been absent from mental health training and curricula. However...

We desperately need to develop infant & early childhood mental health curricula in all health and social care professional trainings. This new article from the University of Washington provides an example. But with NHSE going, who is going to do it now?
