Post by user @jamellebouie.net that reads, "from chandra manning's wonderful book "what this cruel war was over"

Nothing made slavery's toxicity more obvious to Union troops than its effect on the fundamental unit of society, the family. For one thing, slave sales separated families. In the Upper Sout, where many Union soldiers were stationed in 1861, about one in three first marriages was broken by sale, and about half of all slave children were separated from at least one parent. With their own eyes, soldiers saw slavery snap bonds between parents and children. The men of the Seventh Wisconsin were awakened by gunshots one November night. The following day, soldiers "learned, and saw the cause of the alarm in the form of two negro womenβ€”a mother and a daughter." The pair had fled to Union lines to avoid the proposed sale of the "goodlooking" daughter into the so-called fancy trade, which soldiers viewed as a form of concubinage. Outraged by the plight and moved by the vulnerability of the mother and daughter, "every private in the ranks" cursed "that system which tramples on the honor of man, and makes merchandise of the virtue of women," according to one member of the regiment. When an Iowan encountered a young child about to be sold by her own father, who was also her master, he vowed, "By G-d I'll fight till hell freezes over and then I'll cut the ice and fight on."

we got some hibiscus and rose hip stuff that is great. I guess technically that's more "fruity" than "herbal" but "herbal tea" is such a broad concept I'm letting it count

for real, exchanging different types of meats and vegetables wrapped in bread has probably been the #1 facilitator of cultural exchange throughout history. Unfortunately people like this do not like cultural exchange

human history is just regular people trying to exchange different kinds of meat-and-vegetable-filled flatbreads while losers get mad about pointless shit and decide to make everyone miserable

I feel like the thing I always find myself thinking when ppl are talking about "oh the gaming audience is awful" is that, like... i'm not sure i believe that so much as I believe that any unmoderated space will inevitably surface the most toxic people (who drive away more-reasonable ones)

They Live is a fantastic film but every time I introduce it to a Gen Z friend I'm reminded that the plot boils down to, "two hobos carry out a series of workplace mass shootings because they believe half the population are aliens wearing human skin"

Not only this is amazing because part of fascism is the destruction of joy but it also makes it look ridiculous that the military is being deployed to put a stop to this

Some of that may have required the Pro version (for local security policies) and/or a couple registry edits, but it also means not giving MS money and not having anything tied to their service ecosystem, which I want to avoid as much as possible. Other annoyances with Win11 are largely minor.

09.10.2025 18:47 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Like, I'd rather deal with the additional minor annoyances of Win11 than the more major annoyance of a Microsoft Account trying to integrate itself into everything. I have also literally never seen Copilot in the OS, I don't get ads anywhere, and the Start Menu doesn't search the web.

09.10.2025 18:47 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Extended Security Updates on Windows 10 requires both a Microsoft Account and a one-time payment of $30. In terms of annoyance and general Microsoft nonsense, I don't think this is worthwhile compared to Windows 11 with a local account and the web/ad nonsense disabled, if you can. You'll be fine.

WWII "Friend" poster series from the Allied Forces, originally demonstrating the various Allied forces (British, Australian, Chinese, French, Dutch, etc.) and their appearances

It reads:

He fights for FREEDOM"

Leo questioned a world where the wealth of the elite grows
"exponentially" while many "millions of people die of hunger or survive in conditions unfit for human beings." He also criticized "ideologies that defend the absolute autonomy of the marketplace and financial speculation,"
with false promises "that a free-market economy will automatically solve the problem of poverty."

Leo described a "new tyranny," which shuns any kind of oversight and where the economy is structured "in such a way that sacrifices are demanded of the masses in order to serve the needs of the powerful." The poor, he wrote, are only allowed "drops that trickle down."

The pope openly challenged "prosperity theology" and called Christians to the practice of giving charity. "It will not solve the problem of world poverty, yet it must still be carried out, with intelligence, diligence and social responsibility," he wrote.

Popular movements that challenge "the empire of money," invite people to take on the cause to combat poverty alongside the poor, instead of on their behalf, and "make history," the pope said. It our duty, Leo said, to "make their voices heard, albeit in different ways, in order to point out and denounce such structural issues, even at the cost of appearing foolish or naΓ―ve."
