I went through a case without a lawyer. I asked the prosecuting attorney if he would recommend a suspended sentence and accept an Alford plea. He agreed. It was a low level offense, I couldn’t afford an attorney and didn’t expect I could get a not guilty plea. ymmv

If offered a plea deal, be careful. You’ll have a record as a confessed criminal. An Alford plea instead means you acknowledge they have evidence without admitting guilt.

If you can stay in jail & not bond out, consider that. You may then get a bond reduction, or release on your own recognizance. They won’t let you bring your own meds. If you need to see a doctor, you’ll be charged for it You will also be billed for room and board.

When bail is set, if you can pay the full amount, it will be returned to you when you show up to court and the case is settled. If you pay the 10% that is sometimes accepted, or pay a bail bondsman, you don’t get that back.

"If you can’t afford a lawyer, one will be provided for you” does NOT mean that the lawyer is free. You will be sent a bill. They are providing a lawyer that isn’t requiring a retainer first. I have seen public defenders not help, recommend the client plead guilty, and get paid for doing nothing.
