Today, thousands of people came out to events all across NYC—picking up and handing out materials to defend their neighborhoods from ICE. There were whistles kits & know your rights cards. People went to hundreds of businesses hanging signs of solidarity. Incredible feat by @handsoffnyc.bsky.social.

And they obviously don't even like or care about the genre or its actual fans! The two crucial elements that made it a billion-dollar industry! I find their entire business model repulsive, from their avaricious attempt to monetize fandom to their eagerness to hasten the Sheinification of books.

Every book on 831's back- and frontlist is less than 300 pages long (some less than 200) and has matching merch along with "fanfiction" that looks like it was commissioned.

It feels gross & openly extractive, the "fandom" aspect of it as fresh off the assembly line as the cheap-looking swag.

As a bookseller & avid romance reader, I'd seen these books around so I picked one up out of curiosity—and it was one of the worst books I read all year. Digging into 831's site also stirs up questions like, "How can a book have inspired fanfiction when it hasn't even been published yet?"
