That original exploratory research had no clear intent, and certainly wasn't conducted with the goal of finding a treatment for type 2 diabetes. But we wouldn't have this kind of therapy today without that basic, NIH-funded research on Gila monster saliva.

This is how basic, exploratory science, without immediate application, can lay the foundation for major medical breakthroughs.
