Really interesting (and necessary) thread!!

It seems that good mentorship can significantly reduce barriers for many low-SES PhD students.

We, as postdocs, can also help reduce these barriers by informally sharing our knowledge about norms and customs in academia with our younger colleagues.

We should just use standardized test scores + grades to admit students into college.

Everything else is way too easy to game, allowing the extremely rich to dominate access to prestigious colleges. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

I've been saying this for a long time, but the data makes it clear.

Use of mental health medications in the population of Swedish PhD students is 40% higher than a matched sample by the fifth PhD year.

Be kind to PhD students. Don't take up PhD students you can't invest in. Alert prospective students of the reality of a PhD.

In light of record submission rates and a large volume of AI-generated slop, SocArXiv recently implemented a policy requiring ORCIDs linked in the OSF profile of submitting authors, and narrowing our focus to social science subjects. Today we are taking two more steps:

My wife was sexually harassed by Miles Hewstone as a phd student. He was still asked to review her (and other women he harassed) for jobs and promotions. This is so fucked up.

Thankfully, she and many other women testified against him and something was finally done. This is her take on his case:

In the meantime, I'm still trying to understand whether my view (and not theirs) changed because I became a sociologist or a bourgeois, as my former self would have pointed out.

14 years later I find myself constantly reminding my relatives that they should keep distance from alarming media narratives. I tell them that institutions generally work well, cohesion is strong, and chaos is rare. Terrible outcomes happen, but they are unlikely.

I decided to study sociology when 15M in Spain was booming. In the middle of a terrible recession we felt that institutions didn't work, that chaos was the rule, and that the worst outcomes were the most likely ones.

Also, nuts fit well with most mainstream foods: sandwiches, pasta, salads, pizza, soups, rice...

Sandwich with vegetables and nuts

Vegan pro tip for eating at conferences:

Most available vegan options in non-vegan places are just a bunch of processed and vegetables.

An easy way to make food healthier and more nutritious is to add nuts.

Nuts contain protein, healthy fats, and don't need refrigeration. Easy!

Did they hire someone who could speak many languages and this person was French by chance?

Am I just wrong and this is just a very specific Italian accent?

More important: Does Trenitalia need to remind us that we can make a formal claim after each train stop?

Any insights are valued!

On my way to Venice on a @trenitalia.bsky.social train.

Once again, I wonder "why does the voice used in the pre-recorded announcements in English has a French accent?"

Did Trenitalia intentionally try to represent the real spirit of EU travelling without borders?

New paper with @mhamjediers.bsky.social

German judges have discretion to apply rehabilitative juvenile criminal law (Jugendstrafrecht) or punitive adult criminal law to 18–20-year-old offenders. We show that immigrant youths are ~10 percentage points less likely to be sentenced under juvenile law

Nearly 40% of professors come from families without university-educated parents.
But across cohorts, professors from low-SES families have become less common in more recent generations.
