A branch cuts through the center of the frame, angling slightly downward, and sitting on it is a veritable soup dumpling of a bird -- a dark-eyed junco. The bird is a chubby puffball, white on the bottom, gray on top, with a short and stubby pale beak and eyes that look like the button eyes of a toy, little beady glass eyes. It's tucked next to the itty-bittiest pinecone you ever did see. The bird looks content. Or constipated. I dunno, I'm not a birdologist. Photo by me, Chuck Wendig.
