Finland has a goal to be net zero GHG emissions by 2035.

Emissions were declining, the LULUCF removals were strong, the plan was looking good, but then LULUCF collapsed.

Net GHG emissions have actually risen over the last decade!

This is quite an exciting opportunity to push the boundaries of what is known regarding the molecular basis of the formation and demise of photosymbiotic relationships in marine habitats.

Interesting! But taking the four countries and calling it European production is a bit biased. Within the same time frame, many car factories have been build in the Eastern part of the EU.

I just wrote the opposite to what you suggest I claim: "It is clear that reforestation is NOT a fix to fossil fuel emissions, by no means. No carbon storage will help if we do not stop emissions. No questioning that."

19.10.2025 08:50 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

And just as with agriculture (which has huge contribution to climate change), there is a cost to the intensive management of forests, monoculture practices, clear-cutting. And we have the knowledge and technology to do better (e.g. continuous cover mentioned by OP). /2

19.10.2025 08:48 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Thank you. Do we know why?

19.10.2025 08:46 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

It is not about removing forestry altogether. It is about how we manage our forests. It is okay to have plantations. As you wrote elsewhere, it is basically agriculture. But we should not treat actual forests as plantations. And we do need biodiverse, old-growth forests as well! /1

19.10.2025 08:42 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Well, the funny thing is that it is local communities that pay when old-growth forests are turned into plantations. By loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services, including climate resilience.

I am tempted to reply: you tell me, since you brought the wheat field analogy here (which I just made more applicable here). And I started the discussion from a rather curious question about the calculations.

Nevertheless, I found this, hope it gives an image:

Finally, just to be clear - Scandinavian countries have amazingly clean grids and relatively electrified economies. They should be praised for it, no doubt. But the thread was about forests. /6

And clear-cutting can also cause substantial emissions. For example, prof. Anders Lindroth from Lund University estimates that emissions from clear-cutting in Sweden were roughly equal to the of the transport sector (link unfortunately only in Swedish: www.altinget.se/artikel/prof...).

Yet, the timeline of emission reductions matters, and carbon storage can help once/as we do phase out emissions. Natural sinks have taken up much of emitted CO2 so far.

And this thread is about forests from the start... /2
