Pregnancy is a dynamic process, stretching physiological control to the extreme with lasting postpartum effects.
We now have a deeper understanding of physiological adaptation.
In pregnancies with complications (pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, postpartum hemorrhage),
distinct deviations from healthy profiles were evident. Gestational diabetes, in particular, showed marked changes, mostly in the pre-conception period.
The study also spans 20 weeks pre-conception, where we see changes in folic acid, CRP, and albumin levels.
These hint lifestyle changes such as a healthier diet and taking recommended supplements, supporting healthy fetal development.
Nearly half of the lab tests take many months (and in some cases up to a year) to settle after delivery,
highlighting what a journey pregnancy is, even after delivery.
Lab tests can be clustered into stereotypical profiles, implying global control principles governing physiological adaptations in pregnancy.
We see strong undershoots and overshoots in many lab tests at delivery, indicating strong compensation mechanisms in action during pregnancy.
Excited to share our new study revealing the intricate dynamics of pregnancy & postpartum physiology! We analyzed 40M lab tests from 300K pregnancies and 160K women (cross-sectional) and mapped week-by-week changes starting from preconception to months-long postpartum recovery.

Why do cortisol-lowering drugs work for Cushing’s but fail in mood disorders & chronic stress?
We propose that the ability of the pituitary and adrenal glands to adjust their functional masses—normally beneficial—counteracts the drug’s effect. Using a math. model, we screened HPA interventions (1/2)
