USDA Website Blames SNAP Benefits Expiring On Trans People And Immigrants During Shutdown The benefits, which are set to expire on November 1st due to the government shutdown, will lead to millions of people struggling to secure access to food.

Now, the website blames their hunger on transgender people and immigrants.

It's a cynical ploy, an an indication that anti-trans measures are a Trump priority for the shutdown.

SNAP isn't about "people who don't work." It's about people who don't get paid enough to live.

Of the 40 or so million people who rely on food stamps:

* Two-thirds are children, seniors, or disabled

* Most working-age adults who receive SNAP are employed—but in jobs that pay poverty wages

“They’ve got money for ICE and golden ballrooms but not for hungry families” is so easy it’s almost funny

Also, this should not need to be said, because "promote the general welfare" def means feeding people, still it's worth noting that food stamps have a huge positive economic impact overall. Every $1 spent on SNAP adds $1.54 to the economy. As is often the case, doing right is also an overall good.

Interviewer: “How long is this sustainable?”

Food Bank Director: “Wow, um, it’s not—it won’t be from the first day. For every meal that a food bank provides, the SNAP program provides 9… It’s not sustainable for food banks to fill this gap. We were not built to do this.“

This is absolutely tragic.
