I dare someone to submit a paper with null results to Nature, citing their own news article about why no one publishes null results.

Yes, sadly another example of how northern universities receive less funding and fewer opportunities. I couldn't believe it either when I first saw the list of those rewarded with the funding.

Subway-style map of the itinerary in The Hobbit. The main journey is show in three different lines: red (Hobbiton to Goblin Town); green (Goblin Town to the Elvenking's Halls); and blue (Elvenking's Halls to Erebor). There are multiple stops on these lines. There is a yellow line going back from Erebor to Hobbiton, making stops at Beorn's Hall, Rivendell, and the Troll's Lair. There is an orange line directly from the Iron Hills on the map's right side to Erebor, and a purple line from Gundabad directly to Erebor. The map's title reads: "Hobbit Transit Map" and there are directions for both There and Back Again listing the lines and transfer points. A key shows the names of each colored line:
Red: Western Lands Line
Green: Mountains and Forests Line
Blue: Barrel Line
Yellow: Gandalf Express
Orange: Iron Hills Business Line
Purple: Orc and Goblin Reserve Line

Text at the bottom right reads Surprised Eel Maps, 2025

Trump appointees have ties to companies that stand to benefit from privatizing weather forecasts Downsizing at the National Weather Service appears to be part of an effort by Republicans to privatize such agencies.

The downsizing of the National Weather Service and the NOAA appears to be part of an effort to privatize the work of such agencies.

In several instances, the companies poised to step into the void have deep ties to people tapped by Trump to run weather-related agencies. apnews.com/article/trum...

Hey Zack, great stuff. Is there a tool that plots the distributions of temperatures for current and past time periods at a location to show the changes in the distributions, as depicted schematically in the video? If so, that would be a great tool to help communicate those shifts. Thanks!

Hurricane Science Was Great While It Lasted The U.S. is hacking away at support for state-of-the-art forecasting.

πŸŒ€ The DoD will soon stop using and sharing Hurricane Hunter imaging.

Hurricane Hunter planes fly deep into the heart of storms to gather data & generate forecasts.

Add this to the growing list of ways Republicans are weakening storm protections in πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ. #4thofJuly

Mountain Skywater - Colorado River Basin Cloud Seeding Pilot Project - 1971
YouTube video by ClimateViewer Mountain Skywater - Colorado River Basin Cloud Seeding Pilot Project - 1971

Important science lesson: Don't let your hypotheses get too far ahead of experimental results that you can't change them upon contradictory information.

Watch the 1971 video produced by the Bureau of Reclamation about the project: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDL9....

Staff meteorologist Art Rangno has studied the data from this experiment more than anyone over the years and reveals the reasons why it didn't succeed. It's a story of intrigue, power, and money, as well as scientists seemingly ignoring important and contradictory results to their pet ideas.

Excited to share our meteorological–historical review of the Colorado River Basin Pilot Project, a 1970s cloud-seeding experiment that was the biggest and most expensive experiment to try to confirm the viability of enhancing snowfall over the West. Except, it didn't work.

For my part, I've stopped reviewing for for-profit journals. I have more important things to do with my valuable time than give it away to a corporation who takes money from the scientific community and gives it to their shareholders.I have a form letter I send back saying why I am declining, too.

No. πŸ˜‚

They focus on one or two storms at a time. What happens occasionally is they see something at the same time we do and go "oh look at that" while we are in the process of drawing up the new warning.

In most of the major tornadoes I've warned for they have been confused or behind what

There’s a reason they can say things faster than the National Weather Service…it’s because they aren’t issuing official warnings and aren’t concerned about what their false alarm rate is…anybody can look at red and green coming together on the radar and call for a tornado…but is that accurate? No.
