Hard Truths tonight.
I don't watch a lot of Mike Leigh, but when I do I always enjoy it and wonder why I don't watch more. Then I don't watch another of his movies for a year. It's weird.
#FilmSky
Yes, it does. And here we go!

Of course, Rick doesn't believe this. He's just trying to rationalize selfishness and entitlement.
He has that in common with everyone who has ever said this.
#TCMParty
Ilsa, imo, was never sick in Marseilles. Or, rather, she was heartsick. It was only on realizing that Victor would verily not go on without her and that she was endangering his life that she resolved to give up on Rick and love, and go on with Victor.

Although I've always thought the two closeups of the Vichy water bottle are arguably unnecessary, I like the way Renault throwing it down rhymes with Strasser dismissively ashing on the floor of Renault's office earlier.

06.08.2025 02:49 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Even after the shocking and heartbreaking meeting with Ilsa, Rick hasn't forgotten about Ugarte, undercutting the theory that he verily didn't stick his neck out due to his character (rather than what really happened: he recognized Renault was right and there was nothing he could do).
#TCMParty
For my money, this interaction Yvonne shows that Rick has been so stuck in Paris, forever reliving his last interaction with Ilsa, that he's started parroting the lines.

NW Spike Lee in 35mm, introduced by TIFF's fearless leader, as a Highest 2 Lowest appetizer.

Sometimes, when you see clips of movies on TikTok and such, they'll flip the image to dodge claims of stealing. Michael Curtiz invented this technique and did it with his own movies.
(Casablanca tonight at 10 pm and Passage to Marseille on now, as part of Claude Rains SUtS day)

In honour of new PTA next month, I'm (re)watching all his movies this month. There Will Be Blood is obviously amazing, but I really think Phantom Thread is his best.
#FilmSky
I'm usually opposed to the Razzies, but I just watched the new Amazon Prime War of the Worlds and now I see the argument for them.
#FilmSky
NW Hearts of Darkness. On Prime in Canada.
14 year old Laurence Fishburne in Vietnam shooting the maddest movie imaginable is one of the 100 craziest things in American film in the last 50 years. And not even in the top 10 craziest things about Apocalypse Now.
#FilmSky
Tried to watch this Gore Verbinksi/Johnny Depp animated craziness years ago, realized I was either too stoned or not stoned enough, never finished, and forgot about it.
But I recently learned Roger Deakins did the cinematography, his only work in animation, so I'm trying again.
NW #FilmSky
For my money, Chimes at Midnight is the second best Welles.

NW The Raid: Redemption 4k restoration as part of the TIFF50 retrospective.
Happy August, #FilmSky
The commitment and work involved in simply having so many choppers in the background constantly is so beautiful.
Because movies are storytelling even more than stories, that level of care and execution just elevates everything beyond words. It's gorgeous.

I often think about how, for years, most people watched these movies on pan and scan VHS, or even chopped up and edited on tv, and it kind of breaks my heart.
People bemoan streaming wrongly. It's amazing.
Redux on 35mm at the TIFF Lightbox in 2024 was a religious experience. Like 2001, Arabia, and Seven Samurai, Raging Bull, etc.
You can intellectually register a parallel between the helicopters and the ceiling fan. On the big screen, you experience that he's still in that place.

In honour of tonight's Francis Ford Coppola #TCMParty, some pictures I took of the legend last year, at the North American Premiere of Megalopolis.
01.08.2025 00:12 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I'm not American and I see 'payed', rather than 'paid', so much on social media that I actually thought it was an accepted American spelling. But I looked it up. It's not. People just regularly get it wrong.
31.07.2025 15:53 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Olivier's Hamlet often handles the King's ghost so well. It's probably the biggest challenge of adapting this play to the screen, and he takes it on greedily instead of shying away. There are two close-ups I'm on the fence about, but overall I love it.
NW on Criterion Channel #FilmSky
"Listen, we've got this list with "Donald Trump" on it. You're going to have to own this one."

NW for my money the best movie of 2021.
The Tragedy of Macbeth was recently released on PVOD. A welcome surprise for those of us who don't remember our Apple passwords. Have you ever tried to reset one of those? It's crazy.
