Borders aren't real. Grow and share food. Montréal. Canadian hardiness zone 6a (~USDA zone 5b).

It's coming all the way from Manitoba I hear, which is wild.

Come to think of it, they do kind of look like something my Nonna used to grow.

I grew Windsor last year. This year I grew Petite du Lac (a Quebec cultivar so should be ideal for my climate) and Bonnie Lad.

Mine are in flower now! My favorite beans. So creamy and delicious.

I have so many alpine strawberry plants and they pretty much never make it inside. They're just too perfect of a garden snack. I haven't tried the white ones though!

I got cheeky this year and ordered a cold hardy peach, which will also have to be in a pot. Fingers crossed it can handle the winter too! 🌱🤞🏻

This is my third year with my cherry tree and second with my apricot tree. This year they both flowered for the first time and have set fruit! Yay for both surviving the Montreal winter in pots! 🌱#gardening

They hit up my potted plants last night too.

The ones I eat and planted are Nigella sativa. Nigella damascena are apparently edible too buy I am not sure if they taste the same. (I didn't know the difference but just looked it up).

They're very delicious on bread. You can buy them at Middle Eastern grocery stores, and the ones I have bought for eating have been viable for planting. It is my first time though so can't tell you too much about the harvesting process.

I am always keeping my eyes peeled for hardy edible perrenials, and I always find more to add to my list!

A lot to be honest. Peach tree is one. Caucasian mountain spinach is another one I am excited about. Oh and skirret. I am really curious about how it tastes.

Beautiful! And the seeds are so tasty too. I planted nigella for the first time this year.

Thanks! I have joint issues too and scoliosis which certainly contribute.

Thank you! I have started some stretches which has helped some. But I think a lot of it is from poor strength and posture.

a woman is sitting on a couch with her feet on the floor . Alt: a blond middle aged woman is sitting on a couch with an expression of pain on her face and one hand on her back indicating the location of her pain. The text reads "I'm fine just fine 🤪"

Has anyone with back pain started strength training in middle age? Did it help? How did you get started? I want to get stronger to relieve some of the pain I have had since my pregnancies, but it's overwhelming! TIA!

I already grow black raspberries and bought a pawpaw tree this spring (a variety that is supposed to be semi self fertile, fingers crossed).

Makes total sense! I am excited for the journey. We eat a lot of celery, so I am hoping it works as a good substitute! (I have never actually tried it)

I started some from seed this year. I am very excited for this in my future! I love perennials.

The metro area is 800K no? I feel like it feels smaller than it is population-wise.

Luckily we have power. In 2023 we had a big ice storm that left a lot of people without power for a long time though. Luckily it was around this time of year and not too cold. Hopefully they get their power back soon.

Same here with the snow and freezing rain. Luckily the favas can handle it. I am doing more runners and bush beans this year too when it warms up!

Wow! I witnessed a total solar eclipse around this time last year, and it was truly an awe inspiring experience. This photo is incredible.

Looks like topaz and silver. Beautiful. We're supposed to get freezing rain in the next little bit here in Montreal too. I guess just down the line from you.

It's scary. Americans need to recognize that they need to act before it is too late. It might already be.

I think it's easier for us in Canada to call it what it is because the threat is largely outside the house. It's more unsettling to admit that the floor has fallen out from under your own bed while you were sleeping. But your leaders definitely should be calling it out all the same.
