I think of the 80s as extremely conservative, inside and outside of horror. The 90s are progressive, but kind of a sleepy time for horror in America outside of the teen movies. 2000s you have the torture porn movies. New conservative horror would be, like, Terrifier.

Just like the 2010s grief porn horror movies like Hereditary and The Babadook were reflections of that era’s implied and explicit liberal sensitivities.

A lot of popular horror movies now are like the 00s all over again in that they’re implicitly conservative. They might not have an explicit right wing agenda, but they’re riding a right wing zeitgeist that they might not themselves be aware of.
