Massive concentrations of wealth. Failures in healthcare caused by these concentrations. We could imagine alternative patterns of wealth. We could imagine better healthcare.

But no: we will imagine others, and ourselves, dead.

We are in the UK about to give everyone permission to imagine themselves, and others, dead.

And we are doing this at precisely the moment when an ageing population is an increasingly severe economic burden.

But there are others who are not only in pain because of inadequate relief. They are suffering in other ways.

Others would benefit from them being dead. Sometimes these others refuse to imagine them dead. But sometimes they give themselves permission.

There are people in severe pain, often (but not always) because of inadequate medical care. This matters. Voting in favour of assisted dying is not merely ableism: it is mixed with a good deal else.

It is in part a question of imagination. I am part of a community that says, do not imagine others dead and do not imagine yourself dead.

Turns out, the arc of justice bends towards history.
