Coming up this Thursday, October 30, 6:30PM at the PSCO:
A (π»seasonally-appropriateπ») talk by me:
"Haunting Houses: Property as Evidence for the Unseen in Late Ancient Christianity"
There's a Zoom if you're interested---write me at emuehlbe at umich.edu and I'll shoot you the link!
These "Teaching the Codex" blog posts introducing collation formulas from Dr. Sian Witherden @sianwitherden.bsky.social
have particularly good illustrations that make it clear for students learning about it for the first time. π

Medical texts were transmitted in various forms in #Syriac literature well into the modern periodβfor example, manuscript DFM 00696, located in Iraq.

20.10.2025 13:23 β π 3 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0This is a really bad sign for Jewish Studies as an academic field, and if we do not stand up against this, we will not maintain our integrity as a discipline. www.idsnews.com/article/2025...
18.10.2025 01:51 β π 29 π 14 π¬ 1 π 1Opened palimpsest codex (Leiden UL Or. 14236) with Syriac upper text and Armenian undertext. The upper text is written in black and red ink and decorated braided band patterns. There's also a fragment with Arabic on it between the two pages of the opened codex.
Mind-numbing how many layers of history there can be to a single manuscript page: Syriac upper text (10th c.), Armenian undertext (pre-10th c.), Arabic material used for binding (11-12th c.?), Coptic foliation in the margin (date?), modern foliation at the bottom. 16.10.2025 09:54 β π 179 π 52 π¬ 3 π 2Single paper leaf from a medieval Quran set on a blue background. It has 9 lines of fully vocalised Arabic 'muhaqqaq' calligraphy from Sura 17 ('The Night Journey') in brown-black ink. Several holes in the paper reveal the blue background behind the page. A yellow Cambridge University Library label in the lower right corner reads "T-S Ar.41.119."
So with death of academic twitter and academia. edu, I have several things (I hesitate to say "publications") that don't really live anywhere. I'll be sharing them here for now, starting with this old thread about Quran manuscripts found in a synagogue in Cairo:
