I promise you we are going to get through this together. You aren't alone, you DO have a strong will, and a better world is not only possible -- I believe we will get to see glimpses of it in our time.

Let yourself feel the feelings + spend some time connecting to your true self and your core values (I hope they include some kind of desire for the survival of the planet and humanity as a whole). Use your values to guide your actions /resist authoritarian rule in whatever ways make sense for you.

It was beaten into your body at a young age that to disobey or assert your own will brought pain, isolation, and estrangement from your community and caregivers. But that doesn't mean we can't overcome the authoritarian programming we received. We just have to acknowledge that it exists.

Hey if you were raised evangelical or your parents used James Dobson parenting methods (corporal punishment for every act of willful defiance) then you might be struggling right now. It might feel terrifying, shameful, and hopeless to stand up to authoritarian rule. That's very much on purpose.

THEN in the second half of his career he started his political advocacy work and created the blueprints and avenues for endless amounts of anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQIA+ laws to be replicated in every state. Just look up the Family Research Council or your state's Family Policy Council. That's him.

We will never get out of this mess unless we figure out some of the ways we got here. And James Dobson is the perfect figure to focus on: he utilized child development strategies to urge parents to punish and control their kids in such a way that they would grow up to comply w/ authority.

Here’s my pep talk after studying authoritarianism: 1). They never truly expect a long-term resistance movement bc they think people are a collection of trauma triggers who are easily controlled thru terror 2). If they can’t terrorize you 24/7 in your mind, they have already lost the war 3). The single best way you can resist fascism is to not let them terrorize you constantly. Protect your mental health to ensure you are not constantly in a terrorized state 4). Keep connecting to who you are at your core. Your values, preferences, ethics, and beliefs. Build up capacity to resist 5). Remember they are like abusive parents: they only see us extensions of them. They have no clue how powerful joy and community and self-expression can be. We can use this to our advantage — we can be the strong-willed child they never saw coming. Spending time connecting to your true self is not selfish in these times — it’s intricately connected to a resistance movement that is tied to honoring our bodies, our communities, and to the land. We have to build capacity to resist by being exactly who we are!

Never forget that strengthening your connection to your inner strongwilled child is what they tried to beat out of so many of us. If they are so desperately afraid of that, it’s honestly kind of encouraging. We are powerful, especially when we connect and live as our true selves.
