Showing up for urself is not selfish or vain, a sentence I have repeated to myself 9 million times. It allows you to be there for friends, family, and causes when it matters. You canβt help anyone if youβre barely hanging on and many people in our country are barely hanging on.

And after almost a year of this, my hair still is having weird issues, I havenβt lost 50 lbs, and I still have to go to a PT appt for yet another issue. But thatβs ok because Iβm a whole lot happier and so is my family. Itβs not about perfection. Itβs about showing up for yourself.

Do less. They need to do more. You deserve more. Go for the 10 minute walk around the block, especially if itβs between that or another failed trip to the gym. Donate to the organizations doing THE WORK. But take care of you because you matter, too.

So to anyone who is unseen, overworked, and running only on caffeine: itβs time to schedule your appointments. Go see your PCP about that thing. Get your hair cut, it needs it. Take some surveys and use the gift card for YOU. Serve yourself dinner first. Tell your kid to pickup their GD stuff.

The biggest thing I learned is to simply learn how to cope with the guilt and continue on. No one actually thinks youβre selfish just because you spent a little time in front of the mirror or called off to get a haircut. That Catholic guilt sure does a number!!!

I was brought up in a social justice world. Iβm a Mom juggling a job with a toddler. When he cries in the morning because he wants to stay home and watch TV (but also talks about missing me during the day), I feel so bad. Thereβs so much guilt involved when I prioritize myself.

Iβve gone down one size (barely) but I fit into an XL swimsuit last week. So that was a win but it felt so trivial compared to so many of the other things Iβve had to do. Or how much discipline it takes to stick with things. I felt so selfish, so often.

But I never realized how many small steps it would take or how hard it would be to do βsmall thingsβ that I normally would have quit. I had to make some big decisions, work through a lot of tough emotions, and listen to Shera Seven tell me to get some clean clothes on & not look like a mess.

Before I had a kid, I would have called off work, rolled up into a ball, and tried to channel my depression into a long sleep session. But as the default parent for a toddler, that wasnβt an option. This journey (I wish I had a better name for it) has kept me out of the clutches of depression.

I decided to do one βself careβ thing every day. It could be a dentist appt or a gym session. I locked in. There were a lot of doctors appointments I was behind on and physical therapy needed. I actually stuck with both my therapy and physical therapy appointments on a pretty regular basis.

Two weeks after Trump was elected, I knew things would not only be bad for the country but also my career. I hadnβt been taking care of myself and since things were slowing down at work, I decided to recalibrate. (Part 1)

Shooting involving federal agents in Brighton Park under investigation
According to the Department of Homeland Security, a woman allegedly "boxed in" federal authorities, who opened fire.
ICE reportedly opened fire on rapid responders on the southwest side this afternoon.
There are *very few* details on this available at this time. Treat all rumors with caution until verified.
This Sun-Times article cites a DHS statement that should be treated, as always, with extreme skepticism:

I refuse to pretend I donβt have a kid especially because once I mention it to clients I donβt know very well, they often admit that they have kids, too. Itβs wild that weβre all out here sleep deprived & pretending we didnβt bribe our kid to put pants on so we could get out the door!

I just talked to someone about a freelance gig. I talked about my working hours and non working hours due to having a toddler. I also mentioned that being a Mom taught me how to hit a deadline by 4 pm. I sit down around 9 am and power through my work because I *have* to be done by 4:30, most days.

If you protested Jimmy Kimmel being pulled off the air by canceling Disney+ or some similarly simple action that had clear, direct, effective results, it feels good that you helped get him back, right? The neat part of you can choose another simple action, and keep that awesome feeling going.
