The thing about Gene Hackman is that he was always Gene Hackman, but it took microseconds for you to immediately believe him as his character: hero coach, literal supervillain, deadbeat dad, good cop, corrupt lawyer, clueless politician. The single most versatile actor of my lifetime.

Hackman wasn't even nominated for an Oscar for The Conversation. Unbelievable. One of the greatest screen performances of all time.

The way Hackman interfaced with Mamet dialogue was art. I dreaded this day. RIP.

David Lynch said that filmmaking should be fun & joyful. Of course it can be hard work. Of course the work itself can encompass all kinds of pain & painful truth. But the act of creation itself should be full of joy. I think about that all the time.
