I have always wondered the same thing. I imagine this was a try-out for Daniel producing the album, but then either Sinead either decided to go self-produce or Lanois decided to produce the Neville Brothers/Bob Dylan? (supposing the sessions were in 1988/1989).

Recording bass harmonica overdubs with my old Homer, recently rebuilt and tuned by the great Cathal Johnson.

But, of course, this was a relatively supportive minor role compared to his full-fledged collaboration on The Pearl, which makes it a very different record.

He is uncredited, but part of Plateaux was recorded at Grant Avenue, Daniel Lanois' studio then. In his autobiography he talks about engineering it (there's a funny story about an overdub where Eno walks around with wind chimes and Lanois has to steer him away from creaky floorboards).

"I had a bassline in my head that I wanted to act as a hook for the song, and after we cut the track I immediately did the bass because I wanted that signature to be there like a trail of breadcrumbs, so I would never lose my way"

OK, this is actually a tough one, because it's unclear who actually did. The liner notes say Tony Hall, and that's what I always thought. But Lanois has himself said in an interview that he played the bass himself. I would tend to believe Lanois, as liner notes can sometimes be wrong...
