Sedna, an Inuit Goddess of the Sea, is often linked to seals. Her father throws her into the sea and cuts off her fingers when she tries to climb back into the boat. Her fingers become the first seals.

Just watched the Noh play of Matsukaze (pining wind) a Japanese ghost story of spirits unable to pass due to lingering attachments.

The last story was a UK and Japan fusion , a tale about selkies and saint ronan

So I'm sad to say I can't really think of any in western media and even the Anime ones I can think of the monster girl isn't anywhere near as "othered" as these characters are.

I noticed this same dynamic when I was reading paranormal romance more regularly...

Like, let the guy be a main character and get romanced by the dangerous vampire lady! I know there's a market for that. Look at all the folks barking like a dog for Lady Dimitrescu.

And there's a lot of rather candid and pointed discussions about the why's in the quotes...

if you can dodge and block the really terrible examples of patriarchy teaching cis men to hate women. Some rightly calling out the cowardice of Hollywood and the nature of who these stories appeal to and how.

But I want to talk about this from another angle: mythic archetypes!

Humans contextualize the world through stories and when I have a question like this I like to think "do we have a mythological framework for this?" Because sometimes we don't because it's a response to a new thing our culture hasn't developed stuff for yet.

But we do have one here I think.

It's the animal bride concept.

Think about the myth of the selkie and her pelt or just about anytime a man is gifted a supernatural wife in a myth or fairytale.
