rather than a madwoman treated with ether and restrained for her innate connection with the supernatural with everyone dismissing her as insane save for Von Franz who was also dismissed as a crackpot or insane for his belief in occult and supernatural ideas like alchemy

It leans upon female empowerment but not in a way unfitting for the era where the story feels at odds with its messaging but is more framed as a tragic sacrifice that must be done to end the reign of the vampire. William Defoe's character even stating in another age she could have been a priestess

Ellen is given essentially the leading role of the film despite its focus upon Thomas in the start. She's the one who sacrifices her life to protect Hutters and reclaim herself from her endless torment by the dread vampire.

It makes his defeat by his own gluttony and avarice with Ellen tricking him into remaining with her with daybreak all the more satisfying when he finally perishes like he forced so many others to.

There's a particularly memorable scene where he can simply reach out to drag his shadow forth across an entire swath of city with the slightest effort inducing shrieks of madness and fear within the populace.

He can psychically/mystically reach out and appear anywhere he wills to influence the minds or body of those he curses with him subjecting Ellen to many seizure inducing visions where she helplessly writhes or sleepwalks. His dark shadow appearing on walls or creeping across scenery.

There's palpable sensation of dread whenever Orlok appears on screen as it usually indicates an untimely end will draw near with the Count's black power inexorably pulling them towards their demise. His shadow especially is wonderfully used to give his presence an intangible omnipresence.

That element of death following Orlok is ever present with those who meet him dying rather quickly with only Thomas Hutter being a direct survivor of a person who physically met the terrible power of Nosferatu. His presence brings on plagues in cities with rats running rampant and gnawing upon flesh

into their chests while thrusting his hips into their bodies. Ellen even tells Thomas that he could never please her like [Orlok] did to goad him into having sex with her. The entire movie is essentially Orlok attempting to cuckhold a married man and his wife while causing mass death and carnage.

The movie makes no bones about the connection between vampires and violation with orgasmic moans coming from Thomas Hutter (played by Nicholas Hoult) and his bride Ellen (played by Lilly Rose-Depp) making clear there's an amount of pleasure derived from the vampire's kiss while Orlok buries his face

The monstrous and sinister count played wonderfully by Bill Skarsgard is an intimidating figure without a shred of humanity. His dark utterances of Dacian come across like this guttural and black speech while he both is this representation of death and hunger both of naked sexual desire and blood.

After watching Lighthouse I had to give this film a watch. I wasn't disappointed, a horrific retelling of the tale of Dracula done with taste and style.
