Nerdy advocate for static websites and the tools that build them. Inveterate supporter of the Oxford comma. Old enough to remember when Americans were proud to be anti-fascist. Admitted Apple fanboy — don’t judge — but also very pro-Linux.

Analysis | The Fact Checker rose in an era of false claims. Falsehoods are now winning. Longtime Fact Checker Glenn Kessler takes stock as he departs The Washington Post.

"Even as fact-checking surged in the past decade, so had the wave of false claims and narratives swamping the world."

Washington Post fact checker takes the buyout.

Reflects on what he saw, what he did.

Curtis Yarvin tweets:

"Here’s how the libs got the USG to spend $2T a year on libbery. They greased the road with their OWN MONEY FIRST. That’s where this NGO empire came from. Before WW2 it was all private.

Do you know what it took to raise a mil or so for Doug Mackey? I wasn’t involved. But I saw it"

Then a second tweet from him:

"No. We have only one problem. The problem is: our billionaires are n—ers.

They may be rich. But they’re n—er rich. The nature and function of their wealth is profoundly negrous.

You can probably name exceptions. I can too. But in every way, the exceptions prove the rule"

Some utter nonsense, really just drivel, the conclusion of which is edgy racism - this is the essence of Curtis Yarvin, the purest distillation of who he is as a person.

If you’re using the Kopia FOSS backup tool, be advised that there’s a bug in the newly released v.0.21.0 that will cause it to keep making “snapshots” over and over again. You’ll probably want to revert to v.0.20.1 until this is fixed.

And, in all fairness, it likely *is* better (at least, I get that impression from the CF docs and Discord); it just isn’t an especially friendly environment for building a site with something that’s not thoroughly JS-based.

Yes, it was definitely a “buried lede,” as I mentioned before. Am also re-reviewing my own options. Trying to decide if I really need Edge Functions if I do go elsewhere; e.g., right now am unclear on results ($$ ??) of new changes in Vercel (“Fluid”-whatever).

The promise that wasn’t kept AI is distracting us from creating real value. While we chase speed and automation, meaningful and human-centered work is getting left behind. Is this progress?

AI has always promised to help people spend more time doing valuable work by automating the manual, repetitive, toilsome tasks so that software developers can be free to use their time on "something better".

That's not what's happening.

Big Donald Is Watching You: Sliding into autocracy under Trump 2.0 A giant banner featuring Donald Trump’s photo just went up at the front of the Department of Agriculture. A military parade is being planned for his birthday, which coincides with the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army. His cabinet members shower him with praise every time they have a meeting. These are not the kinds of things that normally happen in the United States. It’s more in line with how autocratic leaders display their power in oppressive nations like North Korea and Iran to constantly remind people who’s in charge. But now that it’s starting to happen here, we have to acknowledge it and recognize it as a sign that America is sliding into autocracy.

A giant banner of Trump is now ominously hanging at the front of the Dept. of Agriculture. It's not the kind of thing American presidents do. It's more in line with what you typically see in places like North Korea -- and it's the latest sign that America might be sliding into autocracy. #Velshi

I’ve considered writing a post to the effect of “Yes, I **do** write using em dashes **and** en dashes **and** bullet points, and I am **not** using AI, so get over it”; but I haven’t quite figured out how to do it without entering the territory of “OId Man Yells at Cloud.”
