I spoke with New Republic about #border state economic ties with #Canada and the impacts we could expect from this #trade war and increasingly heated rhetoric. The downstream effects on border communities will be varied and numerous.

Every day, electricity crosses the #Canada-US #border. In 2023, Canada provided power equal to electricity consumption by 4.58 million homes. On Tuesday, Trump imposed a 10% tariff on energy imports from Canada, which will most likely translate to higher utility bills for these millions of home.

It’s hard to stay engaged, but vitally important. I also know it’s hard to see the silver-lining, but there are many people doing good work out there to maintain relationships and make progress.

I think the time is nigh to die on every hill rather than be strategic about your battles. Get your head in the games, people.

Any arguments that Trump and co make about #tariffs being about evening the playing field for American industry are out the window after agreements made today between #Canada and #Mexico. Tariffs were always about strong-arming our neighbors and biggest trading partners into getting what he wants.

Using a unilateral 25% tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico as a threat to “fix” border security is a move. Key trading partners and massively important relationships on the line. Will be interesting to see how this develops to say the least.

It will be interesting to see how cross-border relationships are affected by the use of tariffs, or the threat of tariffs as a negotiating tactic.
