Although actually, I guess the scientists are ChatGPT in this analogy.
"Wow Jeffrey, what an amazing question! You are so insightful! Just the best person to fund my new project!"

Y'know, I feel like the Venn diagram of people - the non-sex criming ones, that is - who found JE charming enough to do business with and people who feel warm and fuzzy when ChatGPT tells them they asked a brilliant question is, if not a perfect circle, darn close.

Right? And they're assholes but there's nothing in that email that's *illegal*. It's just the old boys network protecting itself.

Women who defend sexual predators. Jews who join forces with Nazis. Latinos who round up immigrants. Please explain tk me the logic. Why does anyone think "they are the exception" if they collaborate?

In terms of having more critical thinking practice than average and a high degree of cosmopolitanism, okay. And there is probably a stronger "make the world a better place" tendency compared to "get rich" overall.
In terms of interrogating the status quo, not so much, especially at high levels.

"doing fewer things better means that tough decisions will be necessary"
This is the phrasing I keep hearing from management. Whose line is it, anyway?

Many of my science colleagues are not speaking out-I suspect due to the fear Phil notes, that they'll targeted for loss of funding. I hope they read this account of what happened at a faculty meeting at Frankfurt University in 1933 as the Nazi's took control ๐Ÿงช

Since antiquity, a stranger was always seen as both a potential guest and a potential enemy. This duality is encoded in our words. Host, hostile, guest, hospital โ€œcome from Proto-Indo-European (PIE) root *gสฐรณstis, meaning "someone with reciprocal duties of care/protection/inclusion.โ€

I think they *do* care about climate catastrophe, in that, at least subconsciously, they see a slow motion oncoming train wreck getting closer and faster with no possibility of salvation. See also: no hope of improving life for their or the next generation. Hence the death wish.

Revolutionary therapy treats โ€˜untreatableโ€™ blood cancer Gene therapy which turns white blood cells into a disease-busting โ€œliving drugโ€ has reversed previously untreatable blood cancers

Great Ormond Street Hospital and Kingโ€™s College Hospital in London treated nine children and two adults with T-cell leukaemia using the technique, which scientists said triggered a โ€œdeep remissionโ€ in the majority. Seven are still disease-free three years later.

In some horrific files from a young victim that I can never un-read, he is called out by name (along with Minsky, Summers, and a slew of others). In fact, the victim excoriates "these pigs who call themselves smart and talk about Harvard [who] act worse than animals".

Pam is not looking good. She's looking like a woman who hasn't had a good night's sleep in a long time, what with the blazing handwriting on the wall and the money she got for her soul being spent.

You could house everyone in need of a home with the money being given to ICE. A society that chooses the latter over the former is truly evil and there's no way to spin that.

5 classes I took in college (that impacted me):
- Science Fiction (English Literature)
- Honors Cell Biology (esp. integrins)
- Cultural Studies of Advertising
- An elective module where we did deep dives into capsaicin and neutrophil migration (receptor signalling)
- Modern Dance Choreography

How do cells orchestrate themselves to achieve a directional movement as a group?

Hi, Iโ€™m @sayukihirano.bsky.social. In this thread, Iโ€™ll highlight key mechanisms of how cells communicate with each other to perform directional collective migration.

PIEZO channels are opening the study of mechanosensation in unexpected places The force-activated ion channels underlie the senses of touch and proprioception. Now scientists are using them as a tool to explore molecular mechanisms at work in internal organsโ€ฆ

A wonderful piece by @callimcflurry.bsky.social on how mechanosensitive PIEZO ion channels are being used to explore how our bodies rely on pressure sensing. It is a thoughtfully researched article, with perspectives from many colleagues across the field.
