@benwolfevision.bsky.social Just wrote your dad out of the blue with a question he would know immediately. Told him I think of him often, in part because of our interactions. (And I said positive things about Bluesky as a good "Old Twitter" science news and discussion replacement for me)

The science doesnโ€™t seem so settled after all, and itโ€™s important to understand what happened here. The approach of left-of-center Americans and our institutions โ€” to assume that when a scientific organization releases a โ€œpolicy statementโ€ on a hot-button issue, that the policy statement must be accurate โ€” is a deeply naรฏve understanding of science, human nature and politics, and how they intersect.

At a time when more and more Americans are turning away from expert authority in favor of YouTube quacks and their ilk โ€” and when our own government is pushing scientifically baseless policies on childhood vaccination and climate change โ€” itโ€™s vital that the organizations that represent mainstream science be open, honest and transparent about politically charged issues. If they arenโ€™t, thereโ€™s simply no good reason to trust them.

This is anti-vaxx logic. It is not "naive" to accept the conclusions of experts in technical fields.

One curious thing about philosophy is that we had an internal MeToo a few years before actual MeToo, sparked by a blog called "What's it like to be a woman in philosophy". During that anonymous websites were set up by resentful young men to complain, and this exact sentiment was common and explicit.

I romanticize France in the worst way. I follow the news, understand there are serious problems. But I've loved France for a long time, well before my first visit when I was 30.
My parents loved French food and I had some very good examples in NY and FL restaurants as a kid. That must be the origin.

Johnny: Tossing all these satellites and shuttles out into the cosmos. What do they think they're gonna find up there that they can't find down here? They think if they piss high enough, they're gonna come across the monkey with the beard and the crap ideas? And it's, like, "Oh! There you are, captain! Are you busy? Because I've got a few fundamental questions for you." Are you with me?
Sophie: Yeah. 'Cause let's face it, right? What are rockets? I mean, they're just big, metal pricks. You know, I mean, the bastards aren't satisfied with fuckin' the Earth up. They've gotta fuck space and all.

One of my favorite movies (inexplicably, to be honest) is Mike Leigh's Naked (1993). I find many of the ideas - and quotes - in the film to be relevant today.
