His father was one of the founders, he inherited. I think he has three PHDs, too. So he knows RF.

A list of my 15 contacts with Dr. Rohde.

Dr. Ulrich Rhode. I met him in 1986 at an RF Technology seminar, nice guy. We were interested in RF simulation software. He had just bought Compact Software and was answering questions of attendees. Much later I ran across him on ham radio, made 15 contacts.

When he did this, I was hoping he'd burst into flame. Made me wonder if that was a real bible.

Superb! I also hold to the tenant "Anything can be an antenna". And the NanoVNA is a joy to use.

He did suffer a back injury. And lost his homebuilt plane.

This design was driven by needs more than aesthetics. Had to be made by hand, handle enormous power and be relatively safe. The large upper bulb is there to cool the vapor, with condensate running back down to the pool in the bottom. Oh, and UV light was also a by-product.

This is a mercury vapor three phase rectifier for a broadcast transmitter, about 250kW. I saw similar in a local TV station, down in it's basement back in 1967. Spooky,

I've been a bad ham. No HF contacts since 03/31/23. COVID-19 wiped me out, almost permanently. Still haven't rebuilt the station. Soon though.

1976 - this was my work bench. Messy.
But I had to work on anything Midland ever sold. CB, Ham, VHF Marine FM, test gear, CCTV, home and car stereo.

Looking at my Yaesu FT-70dr, I couldn't help thinking 'This radio is about the same size as just the microphone on my ancient Motorola 80D'. That was 1950s LMR surplus, trunk mounted, drew about 40 amps on TX and would dim my car lights, engine running!

How things have changed.

I was a ham in 1969, novice. Rigs used tubes. Robust tubes. No need for a Z-matcher, it was built in. Life was good. Now it's all transistor, and SWR protection circuits in modern rigs will shut off TX at the slightest hint. I think many have trouble because of this.

#hamradio RW antennas please me. Cheap, robust, work fine.
Z on them runs from 35 to 2200 ohms. My Z-817 has a 6:1 range. With a 9:1 balun a RW is easily matched unless at series resonance. Even then its about 1.5 : 1.

2017 - Returned to ham radio after a long hiatus. Researched rigs and got a Yaesu FT-817 for QRP. All mode, all HF bands. Added an LDG Z-817 for ant matching. Then a simple 9:1 balun and a random wire antenna. Went to a local park, ran a RW antenna. First HF QSO! (NC)
18,000+ QSOs since.
