Hey @schumer.senate.gov way to fail hard. Seven weeks of showdown over the shutdown so you could get nothing is some pretty weak shit, even compared to the normal lack of spine. A lot of people went through a lot of pain and you're throwing that all away for what, exactly?

I just called Schumer. If they cave, I won't be giving money to the Democrats again. Individual candidates may get my support, but I'm done with any party that throws in the towel now.

The funny part is that intelligence abounds. We're surrounded by sentient and sapient organisms that many would deny have consciousness. But the minute we build a pretty good text generator, it's all "welp that machine is clearly a thinking, feeling being". 🙄

The confusion of parallel mechanisms producing similar outputs with the idea that those mechanisms must be similar in nature is a frustrating fallacy. AI doesn't imply human-like intelligence or consciousness in machines. It implies that there are many ways to do some of the things our minds do.

A challenge to creating strong mental models of what's happens inside AI is that much of how we describe it relies on metaphor and analogies. We don't have a good vocabulary for machines that produce the outputs we see now. That keeps leading us down the wrong path about what they are or can do.

My grandfather served in WWII. He was never willing to share much his experience during the war, but I know it was horrific.

To see the sacrifice and duty of his fellow Black veterans of that war erased is incredibly painful and deeply shameful. Fuck everyone responsible for this.
