21.02.2026 05:30 — 👍 92 🔁 21 💬 4 📌 5A liberal elected official who skims the results from our trans policy questions might conclude that, in order to hew more closely to public opinion, the answer is just brute force to become more socially conservative on trans issues. This is not actually what our poll indicates. For one thing, as Lakshya wrote yesterday, there’s little evidence that people are actually shifting their votes on this issue in the short run. But more broadly, as a believer in democracy, I think it’s good for elected officials to try and represent their voters.
In short, these paragraphs seem unobjectionable at first. It's when you get to the last sentence that you have to ask... what does that *mean* in practice? How do you "represent voters" here in a way you haven't already?
Is this just popularism by another name?
She makes a colourable argument against underbussing trans people, fair and reasonable (though notably it does not seem to have persuaded the Argument's regular commenters, which... says a lot on its own).
But she reiterates what was worthy of criticism in the first place.
Ordinarily I don't want to get caught up in Twitter drama, but I am *noticing* some things related to the fallout from that Argument piece about trans rights polling.
So, first and foremost, Jerusalem Demsas wrote up an interesting defence of the piece. It singles out Parker Molloy's criticism.
The reason I keep beating the drum about social media cooking the brains of media people is because that's exactly what's happening.
However reasonable Demsas appears, however right she is that "thoughtless moderation" is bad, she's talking about social media vibes, not politics.
TIL that in the UK there’s a “Mexican” food chain founded by a white British lady named Thomasina. I’d like you all to guess what the name of said chain is. Do not spoil it if you know.
