*Following the publication of this article, Sandfall Interactive wishes to provide the following clarifications.* The studio states that it was in contact with El País on April 25 - three months prior to this publication. During these exchanges, Sandfall Interactive indicated that it had used a limited number of pre-existing assets, notably 3D assets sourced from the Unreal Engine Marketplace. None of these assets were created using artificial intelligence. Sandfall Interactive further clarifies that there are no generative Al-created assets in the game. When the first Al tools became available in 2022, some members of the team briefly experimented with them to generate temporary placeholder textures. Upon release, instances of a placeholder texture were removed within 5 days to be replaced with the correct textures that had always been intended for release, but were missed during the Quality Assurance process.

If this is true, and I’m inclined to give Sandfall the benefit of the doubt, then Clair Obscure: Expedition 33’s disqualification from the Indie Game Awards is disheartening at best and, given what’s going on in the industry, performative bullshit at worst.

Wild that you could have a GOTY shortlist of Blue Prince, Ghost of Yotei, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Mario Kart World, Silent Hill f and Split Fiction, and any other year it would seem totally reasonable. Nobody would consider that to be a weak year.

Outer Wilds is one of the best games I've ever played. You explore a whole solar system and uncover the mysteries both cosmic and local. The moment by moment gameplay is very fulfilling; the more you learn, the more you ask. All in a time looped bow! The ending is one of the best in gaming. 10/10

Return of the Obra Dinn is an amazing detective game. There is very little fat on the bone, almost every line of dialouge and every prop is used to help forward your understanding of the narrative. Some compared it to Outer Wilds, and while I get the discovery aspect, it's isn't quite as deep 9.5/10
