We would have more and better friends in Asia if we took the effort to understand them and treat them with respect. When I lived in Boston, I had family act like I was living in The Wire just because I took public transportation around the city. I had an uncle come visit me and I took him to Harvard Square via the subway and he asked me if it was safe six times before we got on the train.

Americans and their fear / bias against public transport as something only for "poors" and weirdos is just baffling. No-one anywhere else in the world looks at PT this way. Basically you use it if its easier or more convenient than car. No judging, it's just a thing.

Fwiw, I'm an older lady, solo traveller. First-time in SF two years ago. I walked everywhere, including in the Tenderloin and down behind Market St. Day and night. Never felt scared, never harassed. Media at the time was pushing "zombie" and "danger" stories. What a crock.

Right-wing orgs are doing this. Hour-long videos on SF, Seattle, Vancouver on YT look all professional and doco-like, but they are basically there to paint a hellscape. Then you work out it's pure propaganda, funded by an org or lobby group named at the end.

But the stats are cooked. I prefer to rely on my lying eyes.
