Fears that falling birth rates in US could lead to population collapse are based on faulty assumptions While the changes in population structure that accompany low birth rates are real, the impact of these changes has been dramatically overstated.

My coauthors @lesja.bsky.social @karenguzzo.bsky.social & I have a new piece in @theconversation.com , which offers insights into why most demographers do NOT think there is a current fertility crisis and the panic about population decline is unwarranted.

THE JOURNEY I was a non-tenure track Faculty Lecturer (basically another name for a VAP) from July 2018-July 2023. I was converted to a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Summer 2023. June 1, 2025 is my first official day as a tenured, Associate Professor. ___ Before that--- I was an adjunct professor every summer semester between May 2014 until June 2018 (5 years). I was 23 the first time I was an adjunct professor (course lecturer) for a course at McGill ( after the first year of my PhD). The first time I got to guest lecture a class was in the first semester of my MA at McGill (fall 2012). [I also TAโ€™d 13 courses across 2 departments during grad school]. I started pre-preschool at age 2 (1992). I finished my PhD in June 2018 (age 27). At 34 (a few weeks before my 35th birthday), I now have tenure. I am so grateful to the people that have supported me through the many ups and downs.
