If I ever needed to get to the UK super short notice (from Germany), the cheapest option would almost certainly be: get to Belgium, SNCB ticket to Tournai then Lille, SNCF regio to Calais, then bike passenger on the ferry. Lucky to have a folding bike which would be free the whole way on the train.

In my experience, ferry is better/cheaper. It‘s so much easier to travel on a ferry with a bike than as a foot passenger. You can get on way more sailings and it‘s not so much of a faff. It‘s almost worth bringing a bike just for that part.
