I'll have to check it out, thanks. I have his Colors album on cd and I've really enjoyed it.

I don't talk about serious things a lot right now. My spoons are thin on the ground, honestly. But I do watch and listen, and I keep an eye on how the industry behaves, and make note who does and doesn't have trouble maintaining basic kindnesses. I'm sure lots of folks do. So be kind, it's not hard.

Looking over the way the contracts were structured, it was technically legal and was how another part of their business usually worked, but I told them if they ever did anything like that to me again, we would be done and I'd warn other designers about them. They've since closed up shop anyway.

Contracts and business are so often a school of hard knocks. Once, I did an expansion for a publisher, and they applied the advance they paid me against the royalties for the base game, putting it underwater for the rest of its lifespan. They took money from my left pocket and put it in my right.

Speaking of not very important takes, I saw the trailer for the 3rd Tron movie (Ares, I think?), and about 2 seconds in knew I didn't want to and would not see it. I'll still pick up the NIN soundtrack, though.

Always makes me happy to hear Gentle Rain spreading to new folks. Thanks for mentioning it to her, and glad your kid enjoys it. :)

I'm mostly just happy that all the games are coming out for switch 1 as well. I hope a few of them get physical releases too. I'm definitely looking forward to the Little Kitty, Big City update!

Well, they did a SoCal Gen Con for a few years there I thought, but it didn't get a ton of interest given the amount of effort and cost a big show represents for publishers. I agree the exhibitors are definitely the limiting factor overall.

Make sure to eat and drink something. and think strongly about getting a doctor to have a look at you, just in case.

I prefer the term "saucy".

Oof, that's so tough to deal with. I pretty much only ever respond to criticisms if there's a rule mistake involved. The rest of the time, I just shut up and let people have whatever opinions they want.

I had stopped going a couple years before covid because of an incident where I was late to a meeting because it took me 30 minutes to shuffle to the other side of the exhibit hall, packed in like a sardine and struggling with a panic attack. The venue was just too small, and costs were crazy.

...but I get questions where I'm like, "If it worked like that, it wouldn't do anything at all. C'mon, give me a LITTLE credit." Just one of the quirks of rules questions, I guess. I always wonder how much player self-interest is at the root of some of the more unusual interpretations I've heard.

We played and it made pretty much no sense to ever acquire one of those resources. When we finished, I snuck a peek in the rules. They were wild resources, as I guessed from their cost and scarcity. Granted, this was a bad rules reader...

Generally speaking, if interpreting a game rule a certain way makes a chunk of the game worthless, odds are good that you are misinterpreting it. I remember in Louis XIV, there was one resource that seemed weirdly expensive, and I asked if it was a wild resource. The rulebook reader said no...

No, they were definitely Richard's doing. When it came to iconic encounters like that, I tried to keep them in a consistent ratio in the encounter decks even as cards got added, to preserve the vibe, and the Woods was just one of the super dangerous locations.

What a lovely review to come across today. And yeah, I definitely didn't try to hide my admiration for Lords of Waterdeep in the Kinfire Council design.

It'll always be a highlight of my life getting to work on Arkham Horror and having it connect with so many people.

The Sheldons are frigging merciless. Almost as relentless as the inkblot at the Newspaper.

I'd say blink and you miss it, but honestly, I've done a ton of games in the meantime, so it definitely feels like a long time ago for me now.

Also, whoops, sorry for filling up your replies, Norsehound! Didn't notice til now.

No sweat. Hope it's a helpful starting point. I mostly focus on rights reverting to me, cover credit, and advance/royalty rates, but there are any number of small details you can get tripped up by.

04.08.2025 18:53 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Ah, that wasn't too hard, though I had to go to the internet archive for it. web.archive.org/web/20210611...

Hmm, I don't, really. I did take a lot of notes from a Tom Jolly contract I found online at one point though. Gimme awhile and I'll poke around and see if it's still posted somewhere.

Painters are supposed to come by the apartment...sometime to paint around the patio glass door, which got swapped out awhile ago, along with dealing with some random water damage that maybe crept in through the old siding. But, I need to go grocery shopping, so I can't wait around for them forever.

I attribute a decent amount of exhibitor con crud to the stress folks go through during setup and tear down, honestly. And yeah, I'd be very surprised if no one's ever been injured by the lack of AC.
